At the Heart of a Woman

girl eating an orange

There is something about a woman who knows how to carry herself. She has a certain ease about her. She knows when to speak, when to listen and when a conversation really doesn't need her two cents. She has standards. She has a sense of humour.

She can be gracious without being a pushover, generous without running herself into the ground and strong without needing to announce it.

There is something very beautiful about that.

At the heart of a woman

Perhaps it is the little things.

Keeping your word.

Being generous with your attention.

Getting dressed because it makes you feel good.

Putting flowers on the table for absolutely no reason.

Enjoying a beautiful meal.

Calling a friend.

Saying thank you.

Knowing when to leave.

Knowing when to stay.

And occasionally eating the cake because, honestly, life is short.

Living lightly

Living lightly doesn’t mean life is always light.

We all have days.

The complicated ones.
The disappointing ones.
The ones where the coffee goes cold and somehow that feels like the final straw.

But perhaps there is something to be said for choosing how we carry it.

Life can make us wiser without making us harder.

We can have depth without carrying everything so heavily.

We can find something to laugh about.

Something to be grateful for.

Something beautiful to notice.

A patch of sunshine on the kitchen floor.

Fresh fruit.

A good conversation.

A favourite lipstick.

Someone who makes you laugh until you snort a little.

These are not insignificant things.

They are life.

Grace has a sense of humour

I think grace is often misunderstood.

It isn’t about being perfectly composed at all times.

Sometimes grace is simply knowing you’ve made a complete mess of something, laughing at yourself and having another go.

It is being able to say, I was wrong.

It is choosing kindness when irritation would be easier.

It is holding your standards while remembering that everyone else is having a day too.

And perhaps that’s part of becoming a woman.

Learning what deserves your energy.

Learning what doesn’t.

Learning to stand firmly in who you are while leaving plenty of room for joy.

Your best foot forward

I love this expression.

Because putting your best foot forward doesn’t mean having your best day.

It means bringing the best of yourself to the day you’ve been given.

Some days that might look like confidence.

Some days it might look like patience.

Some days it might simply look like getting dressed, putting on your favourite colour and deciding you’re going to make something good of the day.

That counts.

A little light

At the heart of a woman, I think, there is a quiet knowing.

Knowing what matters.

Knowing what to hold onto.

Knowing when to let go.

Knowing the people who make life richer.

Knowing what makes you feel alive.

And perhaps the real beauty is in what you do with that knowing.

How you carry yourself.

How you treat people.

How you care for yourself.

How you show up.

How you leave a little more light wherever you go.

That feels worth knowing.
