More of what makes life feel good
There comes a point when you’ve done enough editing.
You’ve cleared out the wardrobe.
You’ve stopped saying yes when you mean no.
You’ve accepted that some shoes are simply not going to become comfortable.
Excellent work.
Now let’s make some room.
For more of what makes life feel good.
More sunshine.
More laughter.
More flowers on the table for absolutely no reason.
More long lunches that accidentally become longer.
More music in the kitchen.
More getting dressed because you feel like it.
More lipstick.
More bare feet.
More saying yes to something simply because it sounds like fun.
The space we make
We’re often very good at adding.
Another appointment.
Another commitment.
Another thing to remember.
Another improvement to make.
But there is something wonderfully refreshing about removing a few things.
A little less noise.
A little less obligation.
A little less worrying about what everyone else is doing.
Suddenly, there is space.
And space is useful.
You can put something good in it.
A walk.
A conversation.
An afternoon in the garden.
A spontaneous lunch.
A book you’ve been meaning to read.
Or absolutely nothing at all.
There is a certain luxury in having nowhere you need to be for a while.
A little more pleasure
Somewhere along the way, pleasure can become something we schedule.
Something we earn.
Something we’ll get around to when everything else is done.
But the everyday is where most of life actually happens.
So perhaps pleasure belongs there too.
A beautiful coffee.
Fresh sheets.
The first warm morning of spring.
Buying the flowers.
Calling the friend.
Wearing the dress.
Taking the long way home.
Putting music on while you make dinner.
The small things don’t necessarily change your life.
They just make you rather glad you’re living it.
And perhaps that’s enough.
More life. Less overthinking.
We can spend an extraordinary amount of time thinking about how to live well.
Reading about it.
Planning it.
Optimising it.
Making lists about the lists.
At some point, perhaps we should just get outside.
Spring has arrived.
The sun is shining.
The garden is doing its thing.
Let’s take the hint.
Life is not always waiting for us to have everything figured out.
Sometimes it is simply asking us to participate.
To notice the good weather.
To accept the invitation.
To laugh a little louder.
To stay for another drink.
To put our phone down.
To say, “Why not?”
And yes, beauty belongs here too
There is something lovely about getting ready simply because you can.
A little colour.
A little glow.
Fresh skin and your favourite lipstick.
Perhaps you keep it effortless. Perhaps you feel like turning it up a little.
Some days call for five minutes in front of the mirror. Others deserve the full production.
And why not?
Beauty can be playful. It can lift your mood, change your energy and make an ordinary Tuesday feel slightly more special.
No occasion required.
Sometimes the occasion is simply that the sun is shining and you’ve got somewhere to go.
Make room for the unexpected
Not everything worthwhile needs to be planned.
Some of the best parts of life tend to arrive sideways.
The invitation you nearly declined.
The afternoon that turned into dinner.
The conversation that went on much longer than expected.
The song that makes you dance around the kitchen.
The friend who calls at exactly the right moment.
The idea that seemed slightly ridiculous but turned out to be brilliant.
There is something to be said for leaving a little room for these things.
For not filling every corner.
For allowing life to surprise you.
More of what makes life feel good
Perhaps this is the season for a little more.
More colour.
More fresh air.
More beauty.
More pleasure.
More movement.
More connection.
More laughter.
More of the things that make an ordinary day feel like a good day.
We’ve spent enough time making room by letting things go.
Now let’s fill those spaces with something good.
And if that means wearing the lipstick, buying the flowers, taking the afternoon off or ordering dessert…
Well.
There are worse decisions.
Make room for more.
More of what makes life feel good.
